Current IB Math vs Old IB Math

For You Education student answering questions relating to IB Math.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a world-renowned academic program that provides students with a well-rounded education. One of the subjects offered in the IB curriculum is Mathematics, which is divided into two different routes: Analysis & Approaches (AA) and Applications & Interpretations (AI). This change was introduced in 2021 and replaces the old syllabus which consisted of four different courses: Studies, Standard Level (SL), Higher Level (HL), and Further Mathematics.

The main goal of the new Mathematics curriculum is to equip students with the necessary skills for the 21st century, such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and the use of technology. The AA route is a traditional mathematics pathway that emphasizes the development of a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and the ability to solve both real and theoretical problems. The AI route, on the other hand, focuses on the application of mathematical concepts and the use of technology to solve real-life practical problems.

The old syllabus consisted of four courses, each with its own specific focus. Studies was aimed at students who were seeking a basic understanding of mathematics, while SL and HL were designed for students who wanted to take their understanding of mathematics to a higher level. The Further Mathematics course was aimed at students who were looking to further their knowledge in mathematics beyond the SL and HL courses.

The new Mathematics curriculum provides students with a wider range of options, as they can choose to take either the AA or AI route at either a Standard Level or Higher Level. This structure allows schools to group students based on their abilities, schedule classes more effectively, and teach the content in a way that best suits each student's needs.

In conclusion, the new Mathematics curriculum is designed to meet the changing needs of our world and to equip students with the skills they need to succeed in their future careers. The change from the old syllabus to the new curriculum provides students with more options and allows schools to be more flexible in their teaching methods. It is important for students to understand the prerequisites for university admission, as the acceptance criteria can vary from university to university.
